FoodUnfolded: Building Food Literacy, One Bite at a Time

Authors: CCIS-Chamber of Agricultural and Food Enterprises

FoodUnfolded is a European platform that connects people with food. Through stories, videos, and events, it helps us better understand how food is produced, who grows it, and what challenges shape today’s food system.

At the heart of the initiative is food literacy. Food literacy goes beyond choosing healthy ingredients for a balanced diet. It means understanding where our food comes from, how it affects our health, our communities, and the environment. It empowers us to make informed, responsible, and sustainable decisions in everyday life.

An important part of food literacy is reducing food waste at home. Small changes can make a big difference:

  • Organizing your fridge properly helps extend the shelf life of food and prevents bacterial growth.
  • Leftovers can become new meals, such as soups, smoothies, or banana bread.
  • Your freezer is a powerful ally, freeze food before it expires, including bread, fruit, and cooked meals.
  • Store food smartly in sealed containers, label use by dates, and keep items visible.
  • Explore diverse and balanced meals (including the ones from other cultures) to support health, maintain energy, and encourage more sustainable food choices.

Last year, the FoodUnfolded project was showcased at various fairs and events across Slovenia, including the Agra fair, Nature and Health, and Brucovanje. Visitors had the chance to create a balanced meal on a plate by arranging food magnets on a board. They could also use the magnets to properly organize items in a refrigerator, helping to prevent spoilage and extend the shelf life of the products. CCIS-CAFE, assessed the knowledge of the fair participants about food waste through a quiz and provided them with practical tips for reducing food waste in households.

By improving our understanding of food, we become better equipped for life, making smarter choices and wasting less. Food literacy is something we can all build, one bite at a time.

FoodUnfolded is funded by EIT Food, a body of the EU
