Food Loss and Waste monitoring sub-group meeting 2024

Following the 16th plenary meeting of the EU platform on Food Losses and Food Waste, the monitoring subgroup had its second meeting of the year on the 25th of November.

The agenda was divided in Food Waste monitoring in the morning and Food Loss quantification after lunch. Food Waste monitoring session included updates on reporting obligations for businesses in Austria, sector-based monitoring in the Netherlands and prevention and monitoring in Croatia. Eurostat also made a presentation on the challenges and opportunities when looking to the EU food waste reporting in 2024.

Food Loss quantification session featured a presentation from DG AGRI on the state of play of the Farm Sustainability Data Network (FSDN) and specific information on Food loss and updates on the suggested actions to reduce food loss in Sweden.

In each of the sessions the HORIZON projects invited to this meeting WASTELESS (Food Waste) and FOLOU (Food Loss) gave updates on their projects. WASTELESS coordinator, Prof. Ana Barros, presented some of the technical tools to measure and monitor food waste that have been developed in the latest months and are now being tested in specific case-studies of the food supply chain.

The audience of this closed meeting was over 80 participants (online and face-to-face) and representing Ministries, European Commission, Academia, NPOs, NGOs and others. The meeting was not recorded but the presentations can be found in the dedicated platform and a summary will be available soon.
