On 12 November, members of the EU Platform on Food Losses and Food Waste met both viritually and in Brussels for its 16th Plenary meeting.
The agenda included interesting updates on world progress towards SDG 12.3 from international partners working on the topic such as the World Resources Institute, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) or the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE).
Dr. Gyula Kasza, from the National Food Waste Prevention Programme and the National Food Chain Safety Office in Hungary and member also of our project WASTELESS, informed participants about the main outcomes of the international conference on food waste prevention which was organised on 1st October in Budapest with high-level representatives from 16 countries.
Dr. Kasza also gave a presentation on the state of play of negotiations of EU’s food waste reduction targets. After the adoption of the European Parliament and Council on 13 March 2024 and 27 June 2024 respectively, the first trilogue negotiation took place on 22 October with the aim of reaching an agreement on target indicators for food waste reduction. Even though not so many points are still open for discussion, it seems difficult to get negotiations finished under the Hungarian Presidency (ending on 31 December 2024). However, another trilogue will be likely organised at the beginning of December.
After the lunch break, the chairs of the different subgroups of the Platform (food donation, flw monitoring and date marking) also gave an update of the work done in the past year.
The webstreaming of the meeting as well as all the presentations made by the speakers can be found on the Platform’s dedicated website.
